Writing for Kindergartners

Children’s Writer is having a contest.

Age level: Kindergarten
Theme: Exploration
Word count: 150 or less

I’ve only just started. It’s TOUGH! The deadline is July 12, which isn’t much time, but I’m gonna give it the old college kindergarten try.

In addition to basic phonics — short vowels: a as in at, e as in egg, i as in it, o as in odd, u as in up; and mostly single consonants before and/or after (hmm…egg and odd might be out!) — I’m making use of the first two Fountas & Pinnell Word Lists. My recent Kindergarten graduate and alpha reader was given these— current lists of the first Dolch sight words introduced to emerging readers.
