Zeugma

ZEUGMA
the use of a single word to modify two or more other words in different ways.

I love Zzzs… Zirro, Zelda, Zeugma.
Here’s my overly zealous zeugmatic practizz:

Weighed down with the box of letters and secret shame, she stumbled into the sea. Memories and waves crashed against her. Gulls and regrets swooped down on her. Guilt thundered in her ears with every rush of the surf, hope slipping away with the sand beneath her feet.

Walking on the Ocean Floor

She lifted the box lid and her voice, confessing obsessions and indiscretions to the wind. Tears and explanations spilled out of her. He never asked for my hand or any of this. Deeper into the sea and her misery she plunged, letters and hope fluttering away on the breeze.

Finally a great wave of sea water and relief washed over her, concealing her body and her secret at last. Salt and salt mingled, the ocean and closure overtaking her. Filled with burning brine and determination, she plucked courage and a human head from the box. Settling into silt and a gentle embrace, she kissed her lover and her loneliness goodbye.

  1. Wonderful! I looked up the word to get the effect and find it in your text… “She lifted the box lid and her voice, confessing obsessions and indiscretions to the wind. Tears and explanations spilled out of her.” my favorite part… Zeugma, very interesting
