I like my name.
I didn’t have one for a while, because I was supposed to be a boy. My mom finally decided, amidst much poo-pooing and tut-tutting from her aunts, to name me after my great-grandmother. I got the entire name, first and two middles, plus her nickname.
Nowadays it’s a bit of an oddity, but then maybe so am I. Back in the day, it was the name of President Eisenhower’s wife, screen siren Mamie Van Doren, and the character of a very fun bestseller, Around the World with Auntie Mame, by Patrick Dennis.
I still have my old copy. I loved the story, and dreamed of being a fashionable, globetrotting madcap, just like Auntie Mame in the book– way cooler than my mom’s aunts!
